Main Menu

The Main Menu, located on the left side of the screen on most pages, contains links to the primary Themes of the website: Battlefield Tours, Troop Movements, Personnel, Chronology, and Publications, as well as several other website sections.

  1. The Main Menu changes according to which Theme you are in, as well as which menu selections you choose in each Theme.

  2. In some circumstances Main Menu links will also be included in the text portion of Theme pages.


Secondary Menu

The Secondary Menu, located on the top of the screen on most pages, contains links to a variety of information pages: What's New, Website Information, FAQ, Help, and a Civil War Links sections; About, Contact, and Support pages for the Civil War Landscapes Association, as well as a Privacy Policy and a Terms and Conditions page regarding the CWLA website.

  1. The Secondary Menu will always remain the same.


Page Links

In some circumstances links will be found in the text portion of Theme pages.

  1. Page Links may also be duplicated in the Main Menu.

  2. On some pages where the Main Menu and Secondary Menu are not present, such as Battlefield Tour Modern Photographs or Troop Movement Maps, return link(s) are provided near the bottom of the page.

  3. On a small number of pages where the Main Menu and Secondary Menu are not present, such as Battlefield Tour Position, Campsite, or Monument Markers, a return link is deliberately not provided because such pages are linked to from too many entry pages. In these instances, use your Browser's Back Button to return to the previous page.


Icons

Icons are the small, rectangular photographic images that appear in the upper left-hand corner of most pages on the website.

  1. The Icon images used throughout the website will change periodically, automatically.

  2. Regardless of which Icon image appears on any website page, clicking on the Icon image is always a link back to the website's homepage.

  3. Using the View Icons section of the website visitors can see Captions associated with each Icon image. Icon images, therefore, are an easy and fast method of learning about specific Battlefield locations of historic importance.


Image Gallery

Each Civil War battlefield will have an Image Gallery, containing Historic battlefield images, Modern battlefield photographs, and Apple QTVR panorama movie files to illustrate where battlefield events occured.

In the Main Menu (left side of screen):
  1. Click Choose Battlefield;
  2. Click Battlefield of your choice;
  3. If Available For The Battlefield In Question, Click Image Gallery;

From the Image Gallery page, choose either Historic Images, Modern Images, or QTVR Panorama Movies.


Map Gallery

Each Civil War battlefield will have a Map Gallery, containing both Historic battlefield maps and Modern 2-Dimensional battlefield maps designed to explain the detailed and intricate movements of troops during each engagement.

In the Main Menu (left side of screen):
  1. Click Choose Battlefield;
  2. Click Battlefield of your choice;
  3. If Available For The Battlefield In Question, Click Map Gallery;

From the Map Gallery page, choose either Modern Maps or Historic Maps.


3D Gallery

Each Civil War battlefield will have a 3D Gallery, containing 3-Dimensional surface models which reconstruct the terrain of Civil War battlefields.

In the Main Menu (left side of screen):
  1. Click Choose Battlefield;
  2. Click Battlefield of your choice;
  3. If Available For The Battlefield In Question, Click Map Gallery;

From the 3D Gallery page, choose Civil War period Surface Models.


Thumbnails

Thumbnails are the 1" x 1.5" photographic images that appear on the left-hand side of the title banner at the top of most pages on the website.

  1. The Thumbnail images used throughout the website will change periodically, automatically, according to the theme they are associated with - Battlefield or Personnel.

  2. Using the View Thumbnails section of the website visitors can see Captions associated with each Thumbnail image. Thumbnail images, therefore, are an easy and fast method of learning about specific Battlefield locations or Civil War Personnel of historic importance.


How To Learn About A Civil War Battle

In the Main Menu (left side of screen):
  1. Click Choose Battlefield;
  2. Click Battlefield of your choice;
  3. Click on your choice of battlefield information.


How To Learn About A Civil War General, Civilian, Or Unit

In the Main Menu (left side of screen):
  1. Click Personnel;
  2. Click on your choice of Confederate or Union Soldiers; Civilians/Foreigners; or Confederate or Union Units.


How To Learn About Civil War Books

In the Main Menu (left side of screen):
  1. Click Publications;
  2. Click on your choice of Articles/Books In The Public Domain; Suggested Reading; or Indexes By Subject, Title, or Author.


How To Learn When A Civil War Event Happened

In the Main Menu (left side of screen):
  1. Click Chronology;
  2. Click on your choice of Time Line, Calendar, Military Campaigns, or Battles.
